Steampunk World Guide 1: Glossary (USA)

United States

United States (State)

A nation in the New World. Although it is an emerging country, it is one of the great powers with advanced technology, productivity, and military power.

It is the United States of America. Consistently referred to as "The United States" in the Steampunk series.

Because of the extraordinary rise of steam civilization in the world of this series, there are many differences from our historical United States of America, the most prominent of which is the existence of "President Lincoln". In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War with the Confederacy, Abraham Lincoln, then president of the United States, proclaimed himself "the Führer" and established a military government (later known as the Führer's Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address), which established a military government. Führer Lincoln put up a tough apartheid policy and temporarily put parts of the United States and the Canadian Federation under his control.

The Lincoln military administration, backed by huge financial resources of unknown origin, promoted a politics of fear through a thoroughgoing policy of racial segregation and an austere system of national control.

The Confederacy mounted an onslaught to break the internal discord within the United States, and what should have been a United States-dominated war ended in tension. Ultimately, Lincoln was assassinated at the hands of civilians who had rebelled against him and the dictatorship collapsed. In 1866, the Civil War finally came to an end when the Provisional Government proposed a ceasefire in exchange for Confederate recognition of independence and the Union accepted it.

Although his presidency was remembered by the people of that time as a nightmare, some of his powerful laws, including the "Special Act for the Preservation of the United States," (pointed out by pundits both at home and abroad as a bad law) have been carried over into the present government of the United States.

Heavy Engine City Detroit (City)

Detroit City.

The city is the industrial center of the United States around the Great Lakes and is known as one of the leading industrial cities in the United States. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the "Great Engine Building Tower", a distinct supersized piece of construction equipment that continues to transform Detroit into a city of engines and steel, with an efficiency dozens of times greater than that of ordinary construction equipment.

A 1901 article in the TIMES newspaper is quite accurate regarding the city: It is the home of the headquarters of the Ford Motor Company, the nation's largest automotive corporation, and is, in effect, a sort of "castle town" for the Ford Motor Company. Deeply entrenched in urban justice-legislative and executive, Ford's company is literally the master of Detroit, and the intentions of Henry Ford, the CEO, are what the city is all about.

There have been reports of deteriorating public safety in several neighborhoods, and now a Ford-funded pilot heavily-agency police program is underway at the Detroit Police Department. The plan is based on the mechanization technology of the human body, which is based on the advanced technology of Kadath, called Inganok Technology, developed jointly by the Foundation and Ford Motor Company, and there are domestic and international concerns that the technology could be converted to military technology. Rumor has it that "Engine Cops" are operating in unsafe areas using the bodies of policemen who were killed in the line of duty last year (many of their names and other personal information are being withheld) and have been converted into heavy engines.

The Great Organization (Organization)

The Foundation. A symbol of the wisdom of the United States.

It was originally an anti-establishment association of university professors and other intellectuals who were opposed to Führer Lincoln. Eventually, the death of Führer Lincoln and the formation of the United States on the New World served the purpose of the Organization, which in turn turned into an organization to guide the prosperity of the United States.

The present-day Great Organization is a garden of knowledge that governs all the great scholars in the United States. Due to having many Scholars, some point out its similarity to the Scholar Society.

In recent years, many of the Scholars of a "certain faction*" belonging to the organization suddenly died. Although the records show accidental deaths and illnesses, many have pointed to some sort of conspiracy.

(* It is said to be a faction that insists it should take a strong position against the secret society of the "West India Company", rumored to have control over much of the darkness of human society, but it is generally unknown like the existence of the Society)

Los Alamos (City / Organization)

The Department of Science and its location are under the jurisdiction of the US Home Office.

It is generally referred to as the Los Alamos Institute.

Although it is under the jurisdiction of the Interior of Ministry, it is essentially a research bureau of the Army and Air Force. They specialize in various advanced sciences for military use, and are also researching cybernetics (advanced Inganock technology), optical weapons, and new bombs, in addition to Engine weapons such as mobile fortresses.

Pinkerton Detective Agency (Organization)

An intelligence organization based in the United States. It has contractual relations with the governments of the United States, the British Empire, and the Northern Central Empire of Kadath. In recent years, enginization (heavy armament) has progressed by licensing technology from the United States Foundation, and in 1908, a Scholar Machine called a "Final Solution Device (Transformer)" was introduced for dark battles with secret societies.

Ruined City New York (City)

The ruins. It was once the world's largest Engine City, but in the early part of this century, it became a crumbling ground due to the Great Disappearance, a catastrophe that occurred in 1902 that left it in ruins. Even now, with the absence of the smoke-causing factories, the area is still shrouded in gray clouds and muddy rain.

All three million of its inhabitants are believed to have died.

As of 1909, the area was completely sealed off by the United States government, and records show that there has never been a formal survey of the area since it was abandoned. No one has ever entered the area.

However, there are rumors that a woman entered the Ruined City at the end of 1907.

The Great Disappearance (Incident)

A massive disaster that occurred at the end of 1902.

New York City, which was supposed to be the world's largest city, became uninhabited and ruined overnight.

The cause of the disaster has not been publicly disclosed.

However, the White House spokesman at the time expressed the personal opinion that it may have been a chain of runaway accidents at one of New York's many large steam engines, and many newspapers and people believed him.

Various causes were irresponsibly rumored, but not many now speak of them: a failed experiment in the operation of a very large steam engine, a large dense fire, a flood, a local earthquake, an experiment in the use of new weapons, or an accident.

Something happened, probably an accident, that made New York and millions of people disappear. That fact is only documented in the archives and in children's textbooks.

L Foundation (Organization)

The Foundation was established to manage the many legacies attributed to the Universal King, Leonardo da Vinci, who passed away. It is a learned society that lends the technology, machines and designs that belonged to the Universal King to companies in various countries.

Since its establishment in 1908, many countries have expressed the opinion that the Universal King passed away, which is pointed out in contradiction to the news of his death in 1909.

Chapters have been established throughout Earth and Kadath, but the headquarters building is located in San Francisco City, California, USA.

[Caution]

(The following is information not generally known to the public, but which is requested by intelligence agencies and in the dark corners of the world. It is not fact-checked and should be handled with care.)

Wunderkammer (Organization)

One of the many groups of secret societies that have been identified as of 1909.

Claiming to be the rightful successor to the Western Roman Empire, they collect shards of illusion and relics. The damage caused when a high-ranking agent known as a Collector and an Agent (Pledger) of the Society engaging in battle is tremendous.

It is mainly active in Europe, but in recent years there have been numerous reports of sightings in the United States and the Confederacy.

Moon Beast (Organization)

The Moon Beast is an upstart secret society first identified in 1908 by senior detectives of the Pinkerton Detective Agency in the Confederate state of Houston, Texas.

Details about them and their base are unknown.

Using a group of creepy members who appear to be synthetic humans with rubbery white skin, they carry out a series of kidnappings of people involved in astronomy and telescope technology.

When confronted with powerful agents--such as the Pledgers (Covenanters) of the Society, the Collectors of Wunderkammer, and Pinkerton's senior detective--they are said to use "headless, giant-shaped steam engine weapons" as a means of using their powers.

Dark District (Organization)

The Dark. They were a mid-level faction consisting of a group of Knights that was formed as an experimental unit to research and develop a new type of machine body for the Machine Lord, one of the highest-ranking members of the West India Company or the Society.

The group possesses a large number of bio-engineered synthetic humans, a different kind from steam-powered weapons and shadow humans, and is considered to be the leading subversive force in the 1900s in terms of its subversive activities among other secret societies.

They carried out a part of the "West India Company Core Plan: Second Stage" to track and capture the fully engineered human Machina and their siblings, who were created as subjects for the second prototype to the Machine Belt. They were active in various parts of the country, especially in the United States, but in 1908, half of their forces were destroyed by Machina's counterattacks.

Front-line commander Distractor (Type Moran and an earlier prototype of the final machine of the Machine Lord, said to be a black machine designed for combat) was temporarily deactivated but was rebuilt as a terminal for the Golden King. He immediately regrouped his troops and hunted down Machina, forcing them to destroy three of their siblings by their own hand, before driving them to self-termination.

After that, the Distractor disappeared. The reorganized unit was absorbed into the main body of the Society, and the secret society known as the Dark District effectively vanished.
