Gahkthun Novel Anthology Appendix
Glossary
(Relative to 1909)Marseille Offshore Academia
Commonly known as the Academia, it is a huge school and Engine City with a hundred thousand students.
Founded in 1850 (it's name back then being Gahkthun Offshore City), it is a man-made island located in the Bay of Marseille surrounded by fortress-like walls. It voluntarily gathers young talented people from all over the world (excluding Kadath) and has produced many outstanding Scholars to various countries across the world.
The basic training period is 5 years, with an additional four is one advances to graduate school.
It is a highly unknown Offshore facility whose founder and director are unknown, essentially being run by the students. But as of 1909, plans are being made by the French Government to subsidize this operation.
It was completely isolated from the outside world prior to 1908, with little interaction from Marseille other than to receive supplies (Food, Clothing, Etc.). Once enrolled, students cannot leave until they graduate--
As a result of producing outstanding Scholars, they have had strong connections to various countries, and even as of 1909, the Academia cannot be so easily touched by the Governments of various countries.
In the very center of the school is the huge Engine tower "Tower of d'If", the mysterious tower spire "Governing Tower", and two large underground Engines that power the entire island. It is also the World's first autonomous Engine City with near complete Enginization (Autonomous enginization).
It has ties to the empire in the region of Kadath, and graduates are given a degree in Kadath. Graduates with especially excellent grades are given an Advanced Kadath Degree.
Art
Another name for it is the Blessing of Gahkthun.
An ability manifested in excellent students, a supernatural power activated under certain conditions that can disregard the laws of physics. With it, one can conjure flames out of thin air, disassemble tram cars without touching them, walk on air, and so on. The details and principles behind it are unknown, and it it said to be a blessing from the Academia that selects only those with excellent grades.
It is rumored that all Governing Council members must have one of these on their person.
This is one of the many rumors passed around in the school, now recognized as a clear fact and clearly stated in the school's official records.
One thing that is worth mentioning is the puzzling fact that none of the students aren't put off by the existence of Art. Not only to the upperclassmen who have been accustomed to the Academia, but even the new students would hear and see the existence of Art after a few days in...
Old Library
Officially known as the Hugo Memorial Library.
This facility was used back when the Academia was first constructed and referred to as Gahkthun Offshore City, its name was taken from Count Victor Hugo, the first director and prime minister of France's 3rd Dynasty (It's said that the French Government, which promoted the policy of promoting Scholars, was deeply involved in the management of Gahkthun Offshore City when it was first built). Currently, it is off-limits to all students.
Tesla refuses to go anywhere near it for some reason, saying it had something to do with Goose's "Omphalos Kadasia" or the like.
Dropout District
As the name implies, it is a place where failing students gather.
It is an underground mall that exists in the underground space of a quiet ward known as the Former Independent Student District.
There are black markets all over the place, selling a unique currency that can be called the school currency where one can get various luxury goods that are prohibited by school rules and information about things outside the Academia.
The area has become something of a slums.
Tower of d'If
The Academia's symbol, a mysterious black spire located in the center of the school. The Chateau d'If. Originally, the name "Tower of If" was correct as it is derived from the French name, Chateau d'If, but it is been referred to as Tower of d'If for convenience in the present Academia (It is said to have originated from an accent in the pronunciation of the second leader of the Governing Council, which is where it was followed by).
It is said to be thousands of feet long, but the exact number is unknown.
It's said to have no entrance or exit, so no one can enter.
Villain
Also known as Phantom Student. They are a type of Art student that began to manifest in 1908. When it comes to the misdeeds of Art students, they are usually assumed to be brief or have become bodyguards for former gangsters and mafia-like Illegals in the Dropout District but after June of 1908, some Art students have come to call themselves "Villains" where they have come to committing violations against school rules--or crimes rather, and causing trouble with the Disciplinary Police. Many of them wear masks and they roam through the nights of the Academia in disguises.
Vigilante
Art Students that emerged in response to the outbreak of Villains.
Like the Villains, they wear a mask and costume but do not violate the school rules. Rather, they oppose powerful Villains who can't be fought by the Disciplinary Police's normal forces and hands them over to them, which is the big difference. There had been a small number of reports of their activity prior to 1907, but sightings of them have increased significantly since 1908.
Video Radio
A public radio that is broadcast across the Academia.
Although it is the same as the radio broadcasts that begun broadcasting in developed countries in recent years, it makes experimental usage of cutting-edge technology called a seal-engraved video that broadcasts real-time videos alongside audio. This is a technology not yet put into practical usage anywhere in the world, clearly showcasing the Academia's unique and outstanding innovation.
